nettiodesigns_DigiScrapLoveTemplates-previewsHappy Digital Scrapbooking Day!

In honor of this weekend’s festivities, I wanted to let you know about a special offer I have going on here at Nettio Designs.

You may know that at the end of last year I made the decision to retire as a digital scrapbooking template designer. While I don’t regret my decision and know it was 100% the right choice at the time, that doesn’t mean I haven’t missed designing this year.

So in honor of Digital Scrapbooking Day, I’ve put together an all-new set of four 12×12-inch digital scrapbooking templates in my signature paper-lovin’ style and I am offering them as a limited edition available only through Friday, November 7th.

Here’s what the Digi Scrap Love 12×12 Templates look like:

And here’s a bit of layout inspiration using them as well:

The Digi Scrap Love 12×12 Templates are the only single page 12×12 layouts I’ll be releasing in 2014 and they’re only available until Friday, November 7th, so if you’ve been jonesing for some Nettio Designs templates, grab them while you can!

Happy Digital Scrapbooking Day!

P.S. For those of you looking for my photo book templates, I should have those ready for you early this week. I wanted to get these out for DSD first. : )

5 Tips for Capturing A Week In Your Life

POSTED ON October 27, 2014 IN A Week In the Life, A Week In the Life 2014

Quick Note: First up, a little news! After receiving several requests, I’ve decided to bring back both sets of my previously released photo book templates, Photobook Frenzy & Life Captured. I’m working on getting them up for sale here at Nettio Designs now with the goal of having them ready to go no later than Wednesday. Stay tuned and in the mean time enjoy my top 5 tips for capturing a week in your life below!

Week In the Life 2014 starts today and since I’ll be playing along this year, I thought I’d share a few tips I learned when I completed this project in 2011:

nettio_5-Tips-For-Capturing-A-Week-In-Your-Life

1) Begin with the end in mind

Picture yourself at the end of the week – What stories do you want to have captured? What photos or moments would you be disappointed if you didn’t capture? Make an extra effort to focus on those during the week.

For example for me, people shots are a must so I always make an extra effort to use my camera remote or timer to get myself and others together in photos.

2) Have a design plan in place from the start

So I hesitate to mention this because I know your first thought is going to be “Ack, it’s the start of the week and I don’t have a PLAN!” So before you go panicking on me, haha, don’t worry, there’s still time!

You don’t need to have a photo play-by-play for your week before you get started. But having a general idea of what you’d like your completed album to look like can simplify the capture process by giving you a clear focus on what you need (and don’t need to capture) whether it’s long paragraphs of journaling or full-page photos with plenty of white space for text.

3) Set yourself a deadline

Most scrapbookers seem to think the tough part of Week In the Life is the capture week. But the truth is – that’s the easy part!

The challenge comes in actually making time to finish your album.

I don’t recommend trying to create your album as you go through the week (although I know some speedy scrappers do) but I do recommend scheduling time to work on your album and setting yourself a deadline for when you want to have it done. If you leave it up to “when I have time”, it’ll just end up on top of the unfinished projects pile.

4) Embrace imperfection & avoid the comparison game

Part of the magic of Week In the Life is that it encourages you to take a close, detailed look at your everyday life. But you know what? Every day life isn’t always pretty and it certainly isn’t perfect.

So this week I challenge you to embrace the imperfections. Rather than focusing on all the things that aren’t “right”, like your bland beige walls or clutter around your house, focus on all of the bits that are amazing. And don’t let yourself get bogged down into thinking everyone else’s life/photos/story/adventures are better than yours. Your life is unique to you so for this week let’s celebrate all the awesomeness you’ve already got going on.

5) Remember the whole is greater than the sum of it’s parts

Finally, say it with me: no single photo, taken or untaken, is going to make or break your album.

Much like December Daily or Project Life, the magic of Week In the Life is not any individual photo. It is the overarching stories all of the photos tell well combined together.

So relax, have fun and figure no matter what you end up with at the end of the week, it will tell the story of a week in your life.

Week In the Life 2014 | My Game Plan

POSTED ON October 24, 2014 IN A Week In the Life, A Week In the Life 2014

nettio_blurb01

Welcome to Week in the Life 2014.

If you haven’t heard about Week In the Life before, Week In the Life is a week-long memory keeping project hosted by Ali Edwards where the goal is to capture a week in your life using photos + words. This year she is running WITL from Monday, October 27th to Sunday, November 2nd, which makes Monday Day 1.

I participated in Week In the Life back in July 2011 and I loved the end result so much I’ve been dying to do it again. I made plans in both 2012 and 2013 to do it again but each time I got about a day into it and realized enough time hadn’t passed for me to feel inspired by the project again. I felt like I was taking the same photos and telling the same story and it just wasn’t inspiring to me.

But now, here we are over three years later, and a family of three instead of two. Our story feels fresh and new and I’m ready to do WITL again, for real, this time. So here’s my plan for 2014:

My Game Plan for Week In the Life 2014

nettio_WITL2014-sketch

To prepare myself for Week In the Life 2014, I looked through all of my previous Week In the Life posts as well as my 2011 WITL photo book, and I realized something: finding a balance between fresh and new and what’s worked for me in the past is going to be key.

So here are the details of my plan:

Capture photos next week: Next week is the official Week In the Life capture week and I’ll be taking all of my photos during the week as well. Although I’m sure I’ll use my iPhone camera quite a bit because it’s quick and easy, my goal is to focus on using my DSLR. I’m currently stalking the UPS man waiting patiently for my brand new, shiny Canon 6D to arrive so I expect this goal will be quite easy!

Divide my day into sections: One of the best decisions I made for WITL 2011 was to divide my day up into sections (morning, afternoon, evening) and focus on capturing two of the three sections each day, rather than trying to capture every minute of every day for a week straight – which gets old after awhile. This allowed me to avoid taking the same photos every day (like my morning routine) while still getting a clear picture of our life over the course of the week.

Focus on words + photos: For the design, clean & simple was my motto in 2011 and it’ll be again this time as well. As much as I love playing with digital scrapbooking products, I know myself well enough to know I’ll never get this project done if I don’t keep the design simple.

Create using InDesign: Adobe InDesign is my go-to tool for projects like this because the multipage format makes it so much easier to put the book together than creating the pages individually in Photoshop. I’ve already mocked up a basic design to use for my album (sneak peek above!) but I’m open to switching things up if I change my mind based on my photos.

Print as a photo book: In 2011 I printed my album as an 8×10 Blurb book which I loved and may do again, but I’m also toying with doing a 6×8 Artifact Uprising soft cover book instead just to switch things up. I’m a bit undecided about the smaller size and I do love the idea of the two books being the same, so I plan to see how my photo-taking goes for the week and then decide when I get to the creation phase.

Set myself a deadline: I’m horrible about keeping deadlines I set for myself, but I also don’t want this project to end up in the “unfinished projects pile.” So my goal is to have my WITL 2014 album completed and printed before I start my Holiday Faves album in mid-November (no later than Thanksgiving). Once I start on something new I know I won’t want to come back to it so it’s best to finish it before then.

Clean up our apartment over the weekend: Yep, no shame here. I’m all for keeping it real but a little less clutter around our small apartment would be nice. If I’m feeling extra gung-ho I may even try to finish up the last few home tasks that have been hanging around my todo list since we moved in over a year ago. Nothing like a week long photo session to jumpstart the ol’ productivity, right?

I admit I’m feeling a little nervous about Week In the Life this go around.

Overall, I feel good about my plan, even if it’s a little up in the air for my taste, and I know this project is going to be a lot of work. Plus I loved the photo book I made in 2011 SO much that I’m not sure I can ever duplicate that again.

But I sure am willing to try, so this next week I’m going to focus on having fun and reminding myself that it doesn’t have to be perfect to turn out awesome.

Wish me luck!

This Summer In Pictures

POSTED ON October 15, 2014 IN Life Adventures

Do you know how you know you take way too many photos? When it takes you three days to move six years of photos onto an external hard drive. Holy moly.

On the plus side, taking the time to move those photos off my computer freed up enough space that I was finally able to upload all of the photos I took during this summer – and what a summer it was.

nettio_ThisSummerInPics

This was the summer we…

Went from a family of two to a family of three

Held our baby boy for the first time

Were shocked at how two rather chill adults could end up with a lil guy who seemed so unhappy and miserable (poor guy!)

Rocked and shushed him for what felt like eons at a time (but was probably more like minutes)

Learned he’d lost almost 20% of his body weight during the first week and went on a mission to plump him up

Pumped (me) and fed (Adam & I) many many bottles of milk and formula

Washed and hung the world’s tiniest outfits many times over (boo spit up)

Drove many a mile in the car to keep him content and happy

Went on our first official date as parents (thanks grandparents!)

Cherished every moment of sleepy baby cuddle time (my fave)

Realized the world would never be the same the first time he smiled

Made it our mission to get him to smile whenever possible no matter how dorky it made us look

Dressed him up in the most adorable outfits we could find (bow ties for the win!)

Watched him grow through three sizes of diapers in the cutest prints I could find (dinosaurs! camping!)

Had visitors from California, Idaho and Chicago all travel to Texas to meet the lil guy

Took Ryan on his first trip to the beach and the zoo

Discovered the magic that is the swing and swaddle combo

Finally found a swaddle he loved but couldn’t Houdini his way out of (Halo sleep sack swaddle is our fave)

Spent many a day playing on the floor during tummy time

Marveled at how quickly he’s gone from a tiny newborn to a sweet baby boy

Nettio 1 month vs 3 months

If there’s one photo that sums up our summer the best, it would be this one above.

Despite a relatively easy pregnancy and labor, our little guy came into the world kicking and screaming and oh man, was he one unhappy little boy in those early days.

Now that he’s four months old (as of today!) we’ve thankfully gotten into a good groove (can’t recommend The Baby Whisperer E.A.S.Y schedule enough), but I’m not at all ashamed to admit that the transition to motherhood was, and still is at times, a rough transition for me.

Many a tear was shed in those first few weeks (both his and mine) and it took a good six weeks before I really had a full day where I felt like, “Hey I may actually be able to do this” and another six weeks before things started to gel. Don’t let the smiles and pretty photo collage above fool you, I had unshowered, overwhelmed, and in-tears-by-the-time-my-husband-came-home days just like anyone else.

So if you’re a new mom in the throes of newbornness, hang in there, and just know you’re doing a great job. As annoying as it is when people say this because it SO doesn’t feel like it at the time, it really will get better.

Now that I have the benefit of perspective and time, I can look back at those first three months and appreciate them for the challenge they were…while simultaneously doing a happy dance that those newborn days are behind us.

Love ya little buddy. We’re so lucky to have you here.

Curious as to what I’m going to do with the photos I’ve taken during Ryan’s first year? (Currently 3700+ and counting!) Stay tuned because I will have more details of my plan to share with you soon.

Greetings From Baby Land!

lynnette-babyreturn-text

I’m back! Excuse me for a moment while I dig myself out from under burp cloths and dust off my laptop.

Oh man, I’m not even sure what to say about these last three months other than they have simultaneously felt like the longest and shortest three months of my life. I guess having a new baby will do that to you, huh?

In case you hadn’t heard, Adam and I received an extra special Father’s Day gift this year with the birth of our our little guy, Ryan Davis, on Sunday, June 15th. My due date was June 16th so it wasn’t entirely a surprise but it did work out to be perfect timing since we’d just picked up my mom at the airport the night before.

My labor was thankfully what the nurse referred to as “easy and straightforward,” despite a new-to-us on-call doc who insisted on waiting to send me to the hospital because she in her words she “didn’t want us to be there waiting forever.” All I can say is huge props to the ladies who go all-natural for child birth because by the time we arrived at the hospital I was already 6 cm dilated and more than ready for an epidural. Just three hours and nine pushes later he was here!

While I was pregnant, people would often ask me if I was nervous about labor and I’d always say I was much more nervous for the part after labor and well, I was right about that. I went into motherhood expecting it to be challenging but it’s been challenging in so many ways that I didn’t expect – and awesome in so many ways as well. Not going to lie, those first few weeks were ROUGH for us and there were more than a few moments when Adam and I both looked at each other with a panicked “What in the world have we done to our life???”

But I’d heard from a lot of people that around six weeks things start to gel and I’d say that been true here as well. The turning point for me was actually when Ryan started to smile because it transformed him from this raging milk monster (I say with love, haha) into an actual tiny human. And it’s only gotten better since then. Now at almost twelve weeks he smiles and coos and faux giggles and it’s so neat to watch the wheels in his little brain turn as he tries to make sense of this big world we live in.

One of my biggest lessons from this whole new motherhood experience has been a reminder of how important my business and creative adventures are for my mental sanity. While I love our little guy, there’s only so many diaper changes and feedings I can do before things start to feel like a real-life version of Groundhog Day and well business and branding and design are things I do for fun. What exactly my business will look like moving forward or how I’m going to make it all work yet, I don’t know. But I will most definitely be making some tweaks and simplifying but I will share more details about that when I know for sure what I want to do.

In the meantime I have some new products in the works as well as some fun posts planned for here at Nettio Designs. I’ll warn you, September will likely lean a bit baby heavy because it fits with the product I have planned, but I promise it will not be all baby all the time here moving forward.

My dad actually asked me the other day if now that I have a baby will my scrapbooking be all about him, since I’ve always been against that, to which I answered, “No way!” I’m still just as committed, if not more so, to telling my story. That is and always will be at the heart of why I scrapbook. The fact that I’ll now have adorable baby photos to scrap as part of that now is just icing on the cake.

And with that I’m going to wrap this up because I have a little man who’ll be looking for milk very soon, but first I wanted to say thank you to each and every one of you who have stuck with me through this whole Nettio Designs journey. With being pregnant, stepping down from Sweet Shoppe Designs and trying to find my own way with Nettio Designs & Kickass Scrapbooking, it’s been a bit of a crazy year for my business, but right now I’m feeling optimistic and excited for this next phase in my journey and I hope you’ll come along on this next adventure with me.

Taking A Baby Break

POSTED ON June 16, 2014 IN Announcements

lynnette-babybreak

Happy June 16th everyone! Today is my official due date for our first baby which, if you’re reading this, means one of two things have happened:

a) Our little guy arrived sometime between when I wrote this on Friday and today and I am currently hanging out at the hospital or cuddling at home with our new babe.

Or

b) The little guy has stayed put and I’m at my scheduled Monday morning doctor’s appointment to finalize plans to smoke him out.

As I’m writing this Friday morning, my gut is saying the likely scenario is b because he seems quite cozy in there at the moment but who knows! The whole “waiting for an unknown arrival date” is quite nerve wracking!

What I do know is baby or not, today marks the official start of my maternity leave. To be fair, I’ve largely cut back since iNSD when my energy crapped out and maneuvering my laptop around my growing bump became increasingly uncomfortable. But I didn’t want to disappear completely without popping in real quick to let you know my plans for the next few months.

My current plan is to take the summer off from now through the end of August for my maternity leave. That means there will be no new posts at KickAss Scrapbooking between now and then, but I figure that fits nicely with the slow summers in scrapbook-land when you’re all out soaking up the sun anyway, and will allow me to come back in the fall ready to go when things pick up again.

In all honesty I’m not exactly sure what this space will look like when I return – in a good way! I’ve been a child-free scrapbooker for the past eight years and while I’ve loved every minute of it, I’m definitely excited to be starting on this new life adventure and I’m of course curious to see if/how it changes my approach to scrapbooking and my business.

In the meantime if you’d like to keep up with me over the summer, you can find me on Instagram, pinning up a storm on Pinterest or possibly sharing the occasional post here on Nettio Designs. No promises for regular posting when I have an adorable baby to tend to, but if it’s going to happen, this is where it’ll be.

For now, enjoy your summer and I’ll see you when I return in the fall!
